Compare the Sterling Rescue Reusable Yellow Jacket Trap and Trapstik for Wasp to find the right outdoor insect trap for your yard.
Quick answer
For long-term yellow jacket control, choose the reusable Sterling Rescue Yellow Jacket Trap; for a quick, one-time wasp solution, the Trapstik for Wasp is more effective.
Reusable vs disposable: the core trade-off
The biggest difference between these two traps is how you use them season after season. The Sterling Rescue trap is built to last—its clear plastic walls hold up in sunlight, so you can hang it year after year. The Trapstik, on the other hand, is a single-use device that relies on its sticky surface and VisiLure technology to catch wasps immediately. If you want a set-it-and-forget-it solution that works for multiple seasons, the reusable trap wins. If you need instant relief from a sudden wasp problem, the disposable trap is faster.
How each trap catches insects
The Sterling Rescue trap uses a unique design: yellow jackets fly in through holes in the bottom, move upward through an interior cone, and then cannot escape. They eventually die of dehydration. This method is passive and works continuously without needing replacement. The Trapstik uses its exclusive VisiLure technology—an alluring color and multi-dimensional pattern—to attract wasps directly onto a sticky surface. This approach is more active and can reduce a visible nest quickly, but the trap becomes less effective as it fills with insects and debris.
Trade-offs to consider
- Longevity vs speed: The Sterling Rescue trap lasts for many seasons but works slowly as yellow jackets dehydrate over time. The Trapstik catches wasps quickly but must be replaced after use.
- Target insect: The Sterling Rescue trap is designed specifically for yellow jackets. The Trapstik targets wasps more broadly, including species like paper wasps and hornets. Identify the pest before buying: yellow jackets need the Rescue trap; other wasps may respond better to Trapstik.
- Cost per use: At $9.14 (regularly $14.99), the Sterling Rescue trap costs more upfront but can be reused. The Trapstik costs $8.99 (regularly $11.99) and is a one-time expense. If you have a recurring yellow jacket problem, the reusable trap saves money in the long run.
